Vote!
The number one thing you can do to affect change is vote. This November there are two seats up for election, those of Rachelle Price and Julie Hupp. We have two great candidates for those seats who, if elected, would give us a sane majority that could get Rocklin schools back to normal. Register to vote or check your registration here.
Talk to Other Parents
We can’t overstate this enough - talk to other parents! While most parents in Rocklin are highly involved with their kids and teachers, many are not aware of the school board and its actions. Many extend the trust they have in Rocklin USD teachers and staff to the board without realizing they may need to take a closer look. Maybe you’ll also learn a few things you didn’t know about the board or the district.
As parents, we all moved to (or back to) Rocklin because it’s a beautiful city with excellent schools. It’s a great place to raise a family. When most of us talk about the school board with other parents, they are usually very interested as they may not have had time to attend or review school board meetings. Most are worried about school level issues such as class sizes and facilities, so they are both concerned and thankful when you let them know the board is wasting millions of dollars of taxpayer money on lawyers for their own agenda rather than on the students of Rocklin.
Attend A Board Meeting
The School Board meets every few weeks; a schedule can be found here. Board meetings are open to the public and are held at the district office, located at the intersection of Granite Drive and Sierra Meadows Drive in Rocklin.
Meetings start at 6:30pm, however the first part of each meeting does not cover board or district policy.
Public Comments
The public can make comments to the board in two ways: in person and via email. Emailed comments are read by the board only, the public does not get to hear them. In person comments can be made on each specific agenda item as well as a single comment during open public comment.
The district will have green comment cards at the front desk you can fill out with either your public comment topic or the agenda item(s) you wish to speak upon. You’ll need one card for each comment. For agenda items, the board will first discuss between themselves and then call up commenters to speak before they vote. As long as you arrive before the agenda item you want to speak on or the open public comment period you should be allowed to turn in your green card(s) and speak.
During open public comment tiy can speak on any issue which is a responsibility of the board. Per Board Code 9323 they are allowed to briefly respond, however they continually claim they cannot.
Speaking time is limited to two minutes - it used to be three until people started speaking out about the Gender Notification Policy and the board majority voted to reduce it. The microphone will be cut automatically after two minutes, so we recommend writing out your statement and using a stopwatch to time yourself. Practicing can also make it easier when speaking to the board as many people get nervous. Remember, each of us had to get past the anxiety of standing up and speaking the first time. Many of us no longer have qualms about speaking our mind to the board.
